Iran has continued to pressure the Western world by seizing yet another oil tanker in the Persian Gulf, claiming it was “smuggling fuel for some Arab countries" according to an unnamed Iranian official as reported by the BBC.
The Iranian military’s Sepah News claimed the vessel was seized during “naval patrols aimed at discovering and confronting organized smuggling." The tanker is relatively small and thought to contain 185,000 gallons of fuel.
This is the second time Iran has accused a tanker of smuggling fuel and its second seizure in as many months. On July 20th, the Iranian military boarded and seized a British-flagged oil tanker claiming it had violated maritime law. Iran is still holding that tanker.
British warships have been shadowing British flagged oil tankers since the crisis began in July and the U.S Navy has increased its presence since the May 12th bombing for four tankers in the Gulf of Oman.
