Where are We Drilling Today?
In the midst of the daily grind along the chain of upstream operations and support services, the O/G workforce can lose sight of the most basic level of understanding it should maintain, that being having a basic visualization of where all this activity is taking place. The map which follows does just that. Based on data and original mapping work done by The Energy Consulting Group, the “Drilling Activity Map” shows county level location of active drilling rigs in April of 2019. Counties along the red-yellow spectrum indicate mostly oil operations while blue indicates mostly gas operations. Single dots represent single rigs and are centered in the county of activity, and thus, do not represent exact rig location. Alaska is not included in this map.
Of note: Clearly, the Permian region is the hot spot with the most activity Reeves County, Texas. Midland and Martin Counties saw a combined 84 drilling rigs in operation in April. Across the border in New Mexico, Lea and Eddy counties combined drilling rigs numbered 104 rigs.
